North Africa, 1946 - 1953

 File

Scope and Contents

This file is about the archaeological expeditions in Libya, particularly in the regions of Tripolitania and Cyrenaica. Much of it focuses on the archaeological excavations conducted in Libya between 1948 and 1951, particularly in Sabratha and Lepcis Magna, which various British learned institutions and societies supported financially and logistically. Olwen Brogan supervised the Sabratha excavation during the 1948-1951 expedition led by John Bryan Ward-Perkins and Kathleen Kenyon, Institute of Archaeology, University College London. The primary purpose of these expeditions was to train a generation of students on Mediterranean ground and conduct stratigraphic work. John Bryan Ward-Perkins also sought the involvement of students in Architecture from UK Schools of Architecture to support the survey and examination of buildings. Correspondence about the 1948 excavations in Cyrene, in collaboration with the British School at Athens (exchange of letters with John M. Cook and Edith Clay), is also included with reports, appeals, newspaper cuttings, expedition documents, vouchers, lists of photographic equipment and photographs and aerial photos required in situ, receipts and travel documentation. Close contact with Italian counterparts such as Giacomo Caputo, Superintendent of Antiquities for Tripolitania, and Gennaro Pesce are well documented. References to the Inscriptions of Roman Tripolitania project are also present. The extensive exchange of letters between Italian and British authorities - including Leonard Wooley and D.E.L. Haynes - Richard Goodchild and John Bryan Ward-Perkins, provides a unique insight into the post-war situation regarding the restitution of Libyan artefacts exhibited at the 'Mostra d'Oltremare' in Naples before the outbreak of WWII. The numerous correspondents, whether institutional or individual, highlight the complexity and reach of the activities planned around exploring this pivotal area of the Mediterranean. These expeditions played a crucial role in developing the relationships among the past, new, or future British Research Institutes abroad.
