Collection of 19th century and early 20th century photographs by some of the most renowned commercial photographers including: Fratelli Alinari, James Anderson (1850s-1900s), Edouard Baldus (1813-1889), Eugène Constant (active in Italy between 1848 and 1852), Adriano De Bonis (active in Rome between 1858 and before 1868), Paul Lais (active early 20th century), Romualdo Moscioni (1849-1925), Lodovico Tuminello (1824-1907), Antonio Perini (1830-1879), Robert Louis Remy (1810-1882).

Abstract

Photographs documenting the history of the institution through its broad range of events and activities. It includes people, lectures, conferences, exhibit openings and exhibitions, group visits and award-holders' trips. Historical images of the building in Valle Giulia and the area nearby are also part of this collection.

Scope and Contents This collection totals approximately 8,000 lantern slides and is the outcome of a long-standing institutional endeavour aimed at creating and consolidating a very important visual aid which would serve research and teaching purposes. The original nucleus of the collection dates back to 1908, at the very beginning of the BSR's activities. Scope and Contents Michael Ballance, BSR Librarian and Assistant Director from 1957 to 1962, assembled this collection of photographs depicting church plans during his time at the BSR. It totals more than 1,100 photographic prints glued on cards and it is conceived like an illustrated catalogue and visual guide to specific bibliographic resources available in the Library. The collection comprises nearly 7,000 objects, 2 albums and thousands of born-digital files and represents an outstanding resource for the study of the Fine Arts practice of British and Commonwealth artists and architects since the establishment of the Rome Prizes for Decorative Painting, Engraving, Sculpture and Architecture in 1913.

Scope and Contents

This small but important collection documents places and events in the Middle East (Palestine and Sinai) and Italy during the First World War. The photos were taken by Francis Rennel Rodd (1895-1978), son to Sir James Rennel Rodd, patron of the BSR and former British Ambassador in Rome (1908-1919).
