Church Plans Collection
Scope and Contents
Michael Ballance, BSR Librarian and Assistant Director from 1957 to 1962, assembled this collection of photographs depicting church plans during his time at the BSR. It totals more than 1,100 photographic prints glued on cards and it is conceived like an illustrated catalogue and visual guide to specific bibliographic resources available in the Library. Little is known about the scope of this collection and the criteria with which Ballance decided to put it together. Still, it might have supported the needs of readers and scholars of the BSR Library as it offers a comprehensive view of the typology of churches' plans in the Middle East and Africa (MENA region), including Ethiopia, Mesopotamia, Balkans and the Mediterranean. The collection, although lacking a comprehensive and detailed inventory, holds significant potential for research in church architecture.
