Scope and Contents

This collection of photographs and negatives primarily relates to Christian architecture as well as architecture and building structures in the Middle East region and North Africa including Syria, Palestine, Jordan, Israel and Libya. The images were taken by G.U.S. Corbett during his career as architect and in his capacity as officer at the BSR in the 1950s. Corbett worked alongside John Bryan Ward-Perkins and other scholars in North Africa and Greece.

Biographical note

George Uvedale Spencer Corbett, Ph.D., F.S.A., O.B.E., was born 11 July 1913 and died on 3 January 2004. He was an architect and academic specialised in early Christian architecture. Between 1949 and 1950 he was employed by the British School at Athens on survey work at S. Demetrius in Thessaloniki and then he served as Librarian of the British School at Rome from 1954 to 1957.

Arrangement

Photographs and negatives are arranged in four volumes and the negative envelopes bear Corbett's personal annotations providing captions and numbers. No information regarding dates are provided.

The G.U.S. Corbett Collection is located in the New basement (Photographic Archive, cupboard n. 10).

Provenance

The G.U.S. Corbett Collection was probably acquired by the BSR when Corbett was working as Librarian.

Related Materials

- The G.U.S. Corbett Archive including files of notes, notebooks, drawings and photographs was donated by his niece, Elizabeth Perez, to the Palestine Exploration Fund.

- Material on Corpus Basilicarum Cristianarum Romae (1957-1962) made in the preparation of Richard Krautheimer's Corpus Basilicarum Cristianarum Romae (1937-1977) was presented by G.U.S. Corbett to the Society of Antiquaries in 1985.
