The Roman Forum 20th Century Press Photograph Collection

 Collection

Scope and Contents

The Roman Forum 20th Century Press Photograph Collection consists of 75 original black and white press photographs depicting the Roman Forum and the area immediately adjoining it. The pictures were produced in the 20th century by professional press photographers for distribution by press agencies to newspapers worldwide. The photographs in this collection, with very few exceptions, are dated. Most of the photographs also still have brief news stories attached, usually on their back, that provide additional information and insight about the historical context in which they were produced. In many photographs, the Forum is incidental to the main subject matter, providing useful information about how the Roman Forum was seen, used and thought of in the 20th century. This collection also highlights the role of the press in the 20th century. It provides prime material about how newspapers used and handled photographs for publication. Most photographs show clear signs of use, and many have editors' marks, hand-written notes, and artists' touch-ups.
