Ancient Rome in Film Daybill Poster Collection

 Collection

Scope and Contents

This is a collection of ten original Australian Daybill movie posters of films set in ancient Rome. Many of the posters and the films they represent deal with religious and class struggle, especially of the establishment and difficulties of early Christianity and the inequities of the class system and slavery. These posters provide a perspective for understanding how ancient Rome is perceived in the popular imagination. Not only were they shown in cinemas, but they were also exhibited in streets, shops, hotels and other locations. The peculiarity of this collection lies in its format, the Daybill poster, which is exclusive to Australia. It provides an insight into the social aspects of its film industry, public taste, graphics and society in the second half of the 20th century. For the most part, Daybills were printed with lithograph printing techniques and the most notable printing companies were W.E. Smith limited Sydney, Robert Burton Pty.Ltd. Sydney and M.A.P.S. Litho Pty. Ltd.

Provenance

Liam Jensen-Kohl, curator of the collection, assembled this material by accident through working on two different projects. The first was relating to the archiving of the Lynette Jensen's Roman Forum image collections, and the second was a private collection he was working on about 'Jesus in Film', now housed at the Department of Ancient History, Macquarie University, Sydeny, Australia. He then decided to present a selection of these original artifacts to the BSR in 2016 as a complimentary gift to the The Roman Forum 20th Century Press Photograph Collection donated by Lynette Jensen.
