 Sub-Series

Scope and Contents

This Sub-Series includes the following materials:

1. Italian guidebook to Lucera bearing the inscription “GDBJ regalato da Torino Catapano, Aprile 1967.” - ‘Gifted to GDBJ from Torino Catapano, April 1967’; ‘GDBJ’ refers to the late Prof. G.D.B. GDBJ, Professor of Archaeology at the University of Manchester 1971-99, from whom this collection originates. Identity of ‘Torino Catapano’ (beyond their name) as yet unknown.
2. Photocopied excerpts of various papers to do with the study of Neolithic sites in general and the Foggia region of the Gargano. Presumably a research aid.
3. Panoramic shots of “The Tavoliere from the slopes of the Appenines W. of Lucera,” “The Ages Lucerinus: central section of cultivated area S.E. of Mass. Saggese,” “Grotte Colonna: Tower A overlooking the Tiber valley,” “Il Casone,” “Mass. Scoppa,” and the “Teanum Apulum (Site of).”
4. Specified photo collages of the excavations at Salpi.
5. Specified photo collages of the excavations at Lucera.
6. Unspecified photo collages of the excavations at Salpi and Lucera.
7. Unspecified photo collages of the countryside around Salpi and Lucera.
8. Maps and dye prints of several archaeological areas of interest. Including Lucera, a vineyard, the Via Traiana at Mass. Ponte Albanito, and Troia, other unidentified sites presumably in Apulia.
9. Mounted large (around A5) prints of aerial shots of archaeological sites in Apulia. Including Troia Farm, traces of vineyards at Lucera, Arpi. A few have identifying notes on the obverse or around the edge of the mount, but most cannot be placed specifically.
10. Collection of letters, photocopies of papers, and reports. Those of particular interest may be the following. A letter to ‘John’ from ‘P.D.R’ dated 24/01/1953 concerning the location of a Roman villa; addressed from the National Museum in Kuala Lumpur. A typed draught of “The Efficiency of Aerial Reconnaissance: Quantitative Monitoring Techniques and Computer-generated Data,” Graham Lee, 1986. A typed report on the remains of livestock found on a site near Lucera, 1980s. A typed report on the pottery from Massaria Paolo Grande, Lucera, 1980s. A topographical index of archaeological sites in Apulia (the numbers on this probably refer to specific sites which may correspond to Bradford’s as identified in item 2 of Box 1 in this collection). A partial draught of lecture notes seemingly concerning the “new work in Apulia,” thus presumably dated to 1963-1965. An unpublished form of “Aerial archaeology in Italy 1989,” signed by D.N. Riley.
11. Miscellaneous negatives and prints, featuring mostly what seem to be holiday shots of anecdotal interest. Circa 1964. a. Negatives of Pellicola site (kept in original layout, showing missing sections). b. Photos of several unidentified people, presumably, family friends or fellow archaeologists of GDBJ’s. Holiday shots, not archaeological in nature. c. Mixed slide negatives, a mix of holiday shots and archaeology. Some appear to be in Florence, mostly Greece, particularly Greek theatres and the Parthenon. d. Negatives clearly of Hadrian’s Villa. e. Collection of 6 x 4 cm prints of Apulia.
12. Miscellaneous documents relating to excavations at Lucera. Items b) & d) may be particularly useful for studying the history of these excavations. a. Collection of lecture notes, invoices, and inter alia excavation notes on sites including the castle at Lucera. Most are field notes that are in a mixed order, no clear way of identifying which relates to which. b. Typed list of “Occupation periods established for major Apulian settlements,” done by period name rather than date range. c. List of excavated material from Lucera Castle consigned to the Lucera Museum in August 1964. Both English and Italian typed copies. d. Series of lecture scripts typed in Italian. e. Lecture notes on the prehistory of Apulia. f. Aerial photograph collages of Apulia. Mixture of panoramic and 6 x 4 cm prints. Some ground surveys relating to these photos are included. g. Tactical Pilotage map of Italy (missing a section). h. Various archaeological maps charting settlements in Apulia, including olive groves in Tavoliere, with some images relating to those maps. A hand drawn illustration of some earthenware. A draught map of the baths at Valchetta. i. Large number of negatives entirely consisting of pictures of maps and illustrations. j. Strip prints of the negatives from item 12i.
13. Two large family photos and slides relating. One of a wedding and another of a boy on a horse. Unclear subjects that do not appear to match any from any other pictures of slides in this collection.
