Jones Series, 1960 - 1989, bulk: 1961 - 1965

 Series

Scope and Contents

This series includes the BSR's collection of G. D. Barri Jones' material on Apulia, including the Lucera and Salpi excavations (prints and papers). This includes photo collages of site excavation, negatives, maps, and many letters and notes pertaining to those sites. It also houses Jones' slide collection, which comprises all the slides related to the stated excavations in the Scope and Content note on he collection homepage. NB: As far as possible the slides have been kept in their original order as in the boxes they came from, this accounts for what seem to be ‘empty spaces’ in their sheets and in no way indicates missing slides (except for item 11). Of particular note are the maps at item 20, which are illuminating for tracking the history of the excavations of these sites. Several of the glass plates are cracked or otherwise damaged, please handle with care. It also contains the material he collected on Roman and Medieval studies whcih are identifiably concerned with the stated periods, most notably his focus on Roman centuriation techniques. Other items in this collection almost certainly refer to these periods as well but are less easily identifiable. We also have print collages from various sites, the majority from the farm at Masseria Nocelli, Lucera, which includes the most extensive part of our material related to the Nocelli farm. Of note are the maps and diagrams featuring the famous Ctesibian Pump on that site, which gave the initial excavators a lower limit date of 130 B.C. for the site and has been referenced many times.
