Scope and Contents

This file includes reports, memoranda, lists of monuments and artefacts, a few maps and photographs relating to the state of conservation of Antiquities in Tripolitania and Cyrenaica in 1943. It was assembled by John Bryan Ward-Perkins, who was attached to the British Military Administration in that period. These materials provide an insight into the main archaeological sites and monuments of both territories by addressing the question of the future of archaeological research in this area. The reporst to the British Military Administrationn (BMA) include lists of the main sites of both regions, that is Sabratha, Lepcis Magna, Ptolemaide and Cyrene, as well as a list of Italian officials of the Reale Soprintendenza Ai Monumenti e Scavi della Libia. An inventory of artefacts, mosaics and sculpture is also provided as well as a report on damage occurred in Tripolitania as a result of active hostilities.
