War Damage Archive

 Fonds

Scope and Contents

Firstly as a British officer serving the British Military Administration in Libya, and then as a Monument Officer in Italy, John Bryan Ward-Perkins had the opportunity to assemble an archive of documents, visual materials and publications that he brought with him when he permanently moved to the BSR in 1946. These records present themselves in various forms. Alongside a collection of publications in Italian, German and English concerned with the damage to Italian monuments and the protection and restitution of cultural artefacts, are a series of photostat cultural town plans – the so-called Frick maps. There are also numerous copies of reports and final reports (1944-1946) delivered by the MFA&A S/C during its operational activities in the war, some of them bearing Ward-Perkins’ signature. A nearly complete set of publications of protection listed monuments in Italy, arranged by Italian regions, and Civil Affairs handbooks and leaflets to support Civil Affairs officers on the ground are also part of the BSR archival holdings. Correspondence and typewritten notes, together with a partial series of Inventories of Art Deposits (1944) complete the collection of printed matters and paper documents. However, the most extraordinary legacy of this archive is the photographic collection of more than 1,200 silver gelatin prints documenting the actions of the Monuments Officers in the Italian territory. Paired with the Aerial Photographic Collection salvaged by Ward-Perkins on the suggestion of the British historian John Bradford (1918-1975) – and now dispersed in various archives – these sources constitute one of the most substantial library of images relating to World War II.
