1897-98. Excursion notes (Notebook 22.1)
Scope and Contents
This notebook is a very detailed diary of Ashby's daily excursions in the Roman Campagna with his father (October 1897 - May 1898), acquaintances and friends, among whom is the illustrious Italian archaeologist and topographer Rodolfo Lanciani (1845-1929). It is entitled 'Notes on excursions etc, 1898'. The Baddeley family (e.g. St. Clair Baddeley, 1856-1945) is also mentioned together with other people accompaning the Ashbys, for example Henry Pelham (1846–1907), Camden Professor of Ancient History at Trinity College, Oxford. The diary accounts his arrival in Rome in October 1897 and then his various journeys in search for antiquities, not only in Rome, but in other places and villages nearby such as Ostia, Anzio, Tivoli, Palombara Sabina, Palestrina, Montecelio, Tusculum as well as the Roman roads. Ashby draws detailed sketches and annotates various measurements of archaeological findings.
