Letters sent to various recipients, 1923 - 1924
Scope and Contents
The materials comprise approximately 450 individual sheets of correspondence arranged in alphabetical order by name of sender/recipient into a series of denoted sections (A-B, B-C, etc.) presented in chronological order (from most recent to oldest) from the years 1923 to 1924. The materials have a number of overarching thematic threads. First, there are the various documents and correspondences between Strong, the BSR administrators, Ashby, Miss Tardieu and the BSR students, concerning the reorganization and restructuring of the Library. Second, there are many letters asking Strong or Ashby for advice and guidance on visiting Rome, securing permessi, using their photographs, sourcing bibliographic items and, more generally, thanking the staff for their experiences in Rome. Third, as is the case in these miscellaneous boxes, we find many financial documents outlining the costs of transferring materials from the UK to Italy and setting out the payment of BSR staff. Fourth, there is evidence of the BSR's interactions with other research institutions, in Rome and elsewhere, such as the American Academy, the German Academy, The Vatican Libraries, the British School at Athens, the British Museum, and the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge especially. A number of known authorities are represented in the box: Eugénie Strong, Thomas Ashby, Edgar Forsdyke, Evelyn Shaw, Arthur Hamilton Smith, Winifred Knights, Alfred Handiman, Robert Gardner, Esther Van Deman, Edward Bullough, Geerto Snijder, Lord Esher, Miss Tardieu (Assistant Librarian), Colin Gill, Winifred Lamb, among others. It appears this corpus was collected together by Strong for her records. In general, many of the contents are copies of letters or drafts and there are certain cases in which various documents concerning a specific person or initiative are grouped together with a pin.
