Historical note
Objectives and responsibilities of the Faculty of Archaeology have slightly changed over the years. When the British School at Rome was founded in 1901 - and opened its quarters in the Palazzo Odescalchi - a Managing Committee was in charge of the administration of the institution. In June 1912, following on the merger into a more comprehensive body governed through a Royal Charter, the Managing Committee or the 'old School' became the Faculty of Archaeology, History and Letters, the other Faculties being those of Architecture, Painting, Engraving and Sculpture.
Until 1995-1996, when amendments to the Royal Charter entailed the restructuring of the governing bodies within the institution, the Officers to the Faculty were: The Chairman, the Honoray Treasurer; The Secretary; The Editor of the Papers. According to a leaflet dating back to July 1962 and summarising the aims of the Faculty of Archaeology History and Letters:
"The objects of the Faculty are to promote the study by members of the Commonwealth of the archaeology, history, language, literature and art of Rome and Italy of all periods. Subject to the general authority of the Council and Executive Committee of the School, The Faculty is responsible for supervising all the activities of the School which fall within its purview, including the direction of studies carried on at the School, the issue of invitations to distinguished scholars to visit the School and lecture there, the initiation and support of research projects, the publication of the School Papers, the award of scholarships and grants for classical, medieval and renaissance studies, and the admission of students".
The administration and maintenance of Library in the interests of the institution have always fallen under the responsibility of the Faculty.
