Biographical / Historical
Frederick W. Sternfeld was born in Wien in September 1914. He fled to England following the Anschluß and emigrated to New York/USA in the autumn of 1938. He was a highly gifted musician and academic and he completed the doctorate he had already begun in Vienna at Yale University in 1953. After teaching at Weslayan University (Connecticut) he returned to England. He worked at Dartmouth College before moving on to Oxford University in 1956 where he carved out an illustrious career as a musicologist and author. He died in Oxford in January 1994.
