Scope and Contents

1. Arpi. Undated field and typed notes, two sketches, five 6 x 4 cm prints of a Roman candelaro bearing the inscription VIBIAN on the obverse, and a boar in the lampbowl. Two panoramics.
2. Various undated field notes on Apulia (poor legibility and condition, handle with care).
3. Copy of Where did Italian Peasants Live?, Garnsey 1979, featuring acknowledgement to GDBJ. Gifted to GDBJ by author.
4. Notes. a. Various undated field notes, contact prints, and published illustrations on pottery at Lucerna site, Apulia. b. Various excavation notes on Roman sites, including Falerii and Casale Morolo. Several notes seem to reference Pliny and his comments on locations.
5. Extensive collection of fieldnotes, typed notes, lecture notes, maps, graphs and articles all relating to Roman centuriation techniques. Three 6 x 4 cm prints of “Centuriation Road.” NB: Rare original copy of Edward Noble Stone’s “Roman Surveying Instruments,” 1928.
6. Letter from L.J.F Keppie to G.D.B. Jones pertaining to Lucera and ager Lucerinus (Box 2, item 3, for reference shot).
7. Official missive from the Superintendent of Archaeology in Foggia to G. D. B. Jones requesting that any information from the excavations taking place be sent to him.
8. Partial draught of original report by GDBJ of early efforts by Bradford in Apulia, particularly commenting on his 1946 article ‘Siticulosa Apulia.’ Circa. 1961-1964. Unpublished in this form.
9. Letter to a ‘Murge’ about the Siponto from someone at the University of Pisa. Signature illegible. Accompanying photograph presumed to be of Siponto.
10. Several 6 x 4 cm prints and panoramics of the Gargano. Unclear purpose, possibly identifying further centuriation.
11. Draught map of historic Siponto, mostly focused on the main thoroughfares. Dated 12/1/1962. Signature is unclear.
12. English printed map of Foggia.
13. Draught map of Foggia, showing major paths, bodies of water, and archaeological sites. Inscription in the lower-right corner attributes it to GDBJ.
14. Medieval: a. Field drawing and note on a carved depiction of Catholic imagery at La Guardiola. Index of references to sites of occupation in Medieval Apulia confirming their existence/use in various centuries from the 11th-17th centuries, Bradford/Jones. Draught and topographical site maps of the medieval kiln at Il Casone.and the area SE of Troia. More specific excavation maps of the same site. Rough note of inscriptions found at one of these sites (unclear which). b. Several small pictures of the site at Chiesa Civitate, with several field notes on the same location (very rough). A4 card envelope containing these and featuring a description of the contents. c. Loose notes on the Medieval project in Apulia including: four site lists (two handwritten), a letter in Italian from an ‘S. Tine,’ to a ‘Miss Catherine,’ concerning requests from the latter for information on various sites dated 5th Oct 1966, some pottery notes on the site at Fazioli, and a short timeline of Lucera Castle. d. Several large envelopes, mostly addressed to Bradford, which at one time seem to have contained notes and pictures of individual sites. Now the only information that remains is what is written on the envelopes, which may be useful for site references. These were found empty. e. Several large envelopes, mostly addressed to Bradford, which a contain at most two notes on each named site. Found almost entirely empty and certainly contained more documents at one time. f. Loose lecture notes and unpublished excerpts of papers relating to the history of the Apulian project started by Bradford, and other medieval relevant lecture notes. g. Several large photos of medieval sites, including: Mass. Santoro, La Panetteria, M. Ramiano, Mass. La Vedova. h. Circa 40 A5 and 6 x 4 cm prints of the medieval excavations at Salpi showing a range of structures and ditches. i. 8 small prints of medieval artefacts, possibly found at Salpi. One description sheet possibly related to one of the photos. i. 11 unidentified prints probably relating to medieval sites.
