Index Card Series
Scope and Contents
The catalogue of lantern slides was published jointly by the Library of the Roman and Hellenic Societies, and was continually updated to reflect new material and donations. A further aid to the collection was the card catalog, which was originally available on the library premises in London. Described as an “illustrated catalog” in the Roman Society reports, the index cards provided a distinctly visual guide to the lantern slide collection. Organized thematically according to geography, style and genre, historical period, and material, the catalogue was designed to facilitate access to the collection, and to provide an additional inventory from which members of either society could borrow or purchase lantern slides. There are photographs of cities, ancient buildings, sculpture, ruins, antiquities, landscapes, archaeological sites, arches, walls, maps and plans, as well as early modern drawings and prints.

Arrangement
The BSR possesses a part of the original illustrated card catalog, consisting of approximately 1,870 index cards. Index cards include a photographic print, in addition to the title and catalog number. An “S” on the card indicated whether a lantern slide was available. The card catalog was organized thematically and indexed according to specific subjects: geographic location, particular monuments or archaeological sites, architectural typology, or time period. For example, slides are listed under headings such as “Arches,"Walls," "Houses," and “Temples,” or places such as the “Roman Forum.” The index cards are also organized by city, for example, “Pompeii," "Ostia," "Timgad," and “Naples." Modern Rome comprises a separate section and refers to architecture, art, or areas dating after 700 CE.
Dimensions
The majority of index cards measure 10.5 x 16.5 cm. There are also approximately 90 large format index cards measuring 21.5 x 28 cm.
