Chatsworth papers, circa 1885-1910

 Sub-Series

Scope and Contents

This sub-series comprises material relating to ES's time as Librarian to the Dukes of Devonshire (1904-1909) and, before that, her husband S. Arthur Strong's time in the post (1895-1904, his death). It also includes a small amount of correspondence which predates Arthur's librarianship, including periods in the 1880s in which the 7th Duke of Devonshire's daughter Lady Louisa Egerton (1835-1907) was acting as librarian and family archivist.

The materials in this sub-series include correspondence (primarily between Eugénie or Arthur Strong and external researchers requesting to access books, MSS and plays in the Chatsworth Library or artworks and tapestries in the Devonshire Collections), drafts and reference notes relating to ES's (ultimately unpublished) 'Guide to Chatsworth', research notes, and related records.
