Art historian and country house librarian. Strong was variously librarian to the Duke of Portland at Welbeck Abbey, the Earl of Pembroke at Wilton House, Lord Wantage at Lockinge, the Duke of Devonshire at Chatsworth House (1895-1904, his death), and the House of Lords (1897-1904, his death).

Scope and Contents This sub-series comprises material relating to ES's time as Librarian to the Dukes of Devonshire (1904-1909) and, before that, her husband S. Arthur Strong's time in the post (1895-1904, his death). It also includes a small amount of correspondence which predates Arthur's librarianship, including periods in the 1880s in which the 7th Duke of Devonshire's daughter Lady Louisa Egerton (1835-1907) was acting as librarian and family archivist.
