This sub-series comprises a near-complete run of photographs from the Apulia Monumentale photographic survey of architectural and artistic heritage by the Italian photographer Romualdo Moscioni (1849-1925). There is a total run of 175 images in the collection in the BSR Archive.

A specialist in archaeological and architectural photography, from 1891-2 Moscioni was commissioned by the Directorate for Antiquities and Fine Arts of the Italian Ministry of Education to take these photographs, as part of the republic's broader efforts to strengthen national and cultural identity after unification. As such, these images must be understood in the context of nation building in the late C19th, as one of innumerable institutional and private initiatives aiming to create a national heritage based on Italy's architectural, artistic and archaeological assets. They must also be read in relation to the broader discourse around 'national' architecture at the time of their production.

Each image in this series is numbered and mounted on card, with annotations indicating sites and places. The running order is as follows:
