 Series

Scope and Contents

This series includes the archaeological records of the excavation campaigns carried out in the geographical area of the Treia Valley, near the settlement of Narce in the Lazio region. The documentation dates from 1966 to 1986 and consists of correspondence, lists, maps, drawings, catalogues and photographs. The paper documentation in this series provides new elements about the excavation directed by Timothy Potter, the works of archeologists and volunteers, as well as the discoveries made.

This excavation had the merit to highlight the human occupation of the Narce site in the Bronze and Iron Ages, evidence for the development of a falisque colony, from its origins in the second millenium B.C. until its demise in the mid-third century B.C. Narce and its territory turned to be a rich excavation site, with a large number of potteries, tombs and metal elements which were discovered and documented by specialists. The excavation was led by British researchers in collaboration with Italian authorities, and benefitted hugely from voluntary labour supervised by trained staff. In addition, geologists from Princeton University, who took part in the excavation such as Sheldon Judson and Dr. Walter Alvarez, were able to present an important work showing the relationship between geology and human settlement in the region. Many specialists were involved in this project, such as Dr. Douglas Cherkauer, who provided a study of the history and structure of alluviation in the Treia valley at Narce, and Dr. Ellen Macnamara, who produced a report on the metal finds.

The concession for excavation was granted by Dr. Mario Moretti from the Soprintendenza alle Antichità per l'Etruria meridionale, with permission of Sig. Giulio DeSantis of Calcata (the landowner), to the British School at Rome. Other institutions were involved, such as Princeton University, University of California Santa Cruz, the Comitato per le attività archeologiche nella Tuscia and the Departement of Classics and Archaelogy at Lancaster University.

The Narce series is arranged thematically and chronologically. The original order remains unclear. Most site notebooks and registers within the series have titles and dates.
