This Series is concerned with files of award-holders who have applied for scholarships in the Fine Arts. It includes mostly correspondence between scholars and BSR Administrative Staff. Application forms and reports from scholars, reference letters and financial records are also preserved.

Biographical / Historical

The Incorporated Edwin Austin Abbey Memorial Scholarship is an association founded in 1926 by Gertrude Abbey, widow of Edwin Austin Abbey (1852-1911), american artist and illustrator who settled in England in 1880. During his lifetime Edwin Abbey, member of the Royal Academy of Arts, took an active interest towards the foundation of the BSR, and its collaboration with the Royal Academy. In 1926, The Incorporated Edwin Austin Abbey Memorial founded the Abbey Major Scholarship in Mural Painting, administered by the Abbey Council, and in 1937 the responsability of the scholarship passed to the BSR Faculty of Painting.

Abstract

The Abbey Major Scholarship in Painting was established in 1937. Funded by the Abbey Council through the Incorporated Edwin Austin Abbey Memorial Scholarship, it changed its name into the Abbey Scholarship and Award in Painting in 1990.

Arrangement

Boxes are arranged in chronological order, based on the academic year of the scholarship, and files inside the boxes are arranged both in chronological and in alphabetical order, by names of the scholarship holders.

Physical Location

Boxes 01 to 04 are to be found in the Basement of the New Extension (compact shelf 02, shelf 01).

Processing Information

All files have been physically processed, substituting old folders with new ones and adding new File numbers and new labels to each folder.
