Drawer Collection

 Sub-Series

Scope and Contents

21 boxes of photographic materials spanning a wide range of subjects, places, and organisations. This sub-series is so called because during Strong's lifetime, its constituent records were originally housed in 2 chests of drawers (total 8 drawers).

The bulk of materials in this collection relate to Roman art, sculpture, and antiquities in or originating from Italy, but it also features material from/relating to the Melchett Collection (UK; see also ES-PP-03.01., ES's draft catalogue of Lord Melchett's Greek and Roman antiquities), the Louvre (Paris), Copenhagen, Greece, Constantinople (Istanbul), Syria, the British Museum (London), Leptis Magna, Germany, and southwest Europe.

It is not clear whether this material was historically available for consultation in the BSR Library (especially ES-PH-02.17 - ES-PH-02.21).

Custodial History

This sub-series was originally housed in 2 chests of drawers (total 8 drawers), probably in Strong's own apartment on via Balbo or available to BSR scholars and residents in the Library. The original list, under the generic title of ‘Photographs’, has been kept, but the arrangement of these photographs has changed over the years, presumably after the materials were moved several times from various storage deposit areas and filing cabinets. These images are now kept in melanex sleeves in ring binder boxes.

The organisation of the photographs that were contained in folders labelled by ESS has been partially shuffled. Although the original order and sequence of the photographs has completely changed, a detailed inventory compiled in the 1980s when this material was stored in a filing cabinet may help to map pristine series that have been dispersed.

In the 1980s, or at some point since the material arrived at the BSR after Strong’s death, the collection of photographs was stored in filing cabinets in a sequence that did not replicate her original scheme. At that time, they were organised according to the following scheme: Filing cabinet, drawer 1, with files running from 1 to 27 (807 items); and filing cabinet, drawer 2, with files running from 1 to 31 (847 items). To maintain a semblance of archival continuity, these filing cabinet, drawer and file numbers are included on the archive boxes that presently house the materials.
