Historical Note

The Gulbenkian Scholarship was an annual scholarship established in 1959, with the approval of the BSR Faculty of Sculpture. The financial contribution came through the Gulbenkian Foundation, based in Lisbon, for a scholarship dedicated to “Sculptors from the British Commonwealth”. The Foundation provided its support until 1989. The Scholarship emerged as an alternative to the Rome Scholarship in sculpture. The award provided each scholar with a monetary amount and a nine-month stay in Rome. The candidates must be citizens of the British Commonwealth and less than 30 years old on 1 July of their scholarship year. In 1966, a financial adjustment due to the economic situation and the need shared by the scholars to transport their work from abroad to their homeland was approved. Calouste Sarkis Gulbenkian, naturalised British businessman and philanthropist to whom the Gulbenkian Foundation is entitled, is listed amongst “Life members” of the British School at Rome.
