Halliday, Edward Irvine, 1902-1984 (British painter)

Biography/Historical Note

Mural painter in the 1920s, he then turned to portraits in oil and watercolour, specialising in portraits. He first attended Liverpool College of Art and continued his studies at Académie Colarossi in Paris and at the Royal College of Art. He also worked in radio, where he had two arts series radio programs, Artists at Work (1932) and Design in Modern Life (1934). The success led him to television work as host (in the 1950s, he was the voice behind the BBC Television Newsreel.
