Fairclough, Wilfred, 1907-1996 (British painter and printmaker)

Biography/Historical Note

British painter and etcher, born in Blackburn, Lancashire. Took evening classes and eventually a part-time teahcing role at the Blackburn School of Arts and Crafts, before studying at the Royal College of Art. Rome Scholarship in Engraving at the British School, 1934-37. Returning to England, he taught at the Kingston School of Art before serving in the Royal Air Force during the Second World War. He was elected to the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers (1946) and also to the Royal Soceity of Watercolourers (1968). He was a prolific printmaker, producing around 150 works inspired by his wide travels across Europe.
