Biography/Historical Note

Born in Bury, England in 1894, Whitehead was an artist and printmaker. Trained in Bury, Manchester and the Slade School of Fine Art in the 1910s, Whitehead was accepted onto the Rome Scholarship in Engraving in 1921, becoming the first woman to hold the award. Whitehead's etchings generally depict scenes from everyday life in Italy. Many copies of her prints are held in the BSR Archive.
