Historical note
The Rome Scholarship in Architecture was a three-year scholarship established in 1912 with the approval and financial support of the Royal Commissioners for the Exhibition of 1851. The Faculty of Architecture was responsible for the examination of the candidates, the supervision of the scholars' work, the establishment of a course of study as well as for advising the Executive Committee on matters concerning the interests of its students. The financial contribution through the Royal Commission for Exhibition of 1851 provided its support until 1996. The withdrawal of the Royal Commission from funding meant the search for new income possibilities, which the BSR found in the Department of Education and Science, persuaded by the British Academy to increase the level of funding to the BSR. In 1992 important changes occurred in the administrative organisation of the BSR, leading to the unification of the four different Faculties (Painting, Sculpture, Engraving/Printmaking and Architecture) into the Faculty of the Fine Arts.
