Dissertation and Photo album, 1955 - 1957
Scope and Contents
These documents comprise Giovanni Colonna’s dissertation assigned by Massimo Pallottino on 15th November 1955, and discussed on 23rd February 1957, as well as a photo album related to the dissertation. The original typescript is a single copy on tissue paper. The scholar cut out the pictures (as this was the practice at the time) to prepare for the publisher the tables of his volume on Umbrian Sabellic votive bronzes “Bronzi votivi umbro - sabellici a figura umana. I - Periodo ‘arcaico’”, published in 1970. Colonna arranged his thesis on Umbrian Sabellic votive bronzes using a broad topographical/typological structure, distinguishing between North and South Umbrian and Sabellic productions. He also adopted a stylistic approach, recognising that Masters and Groups were divided into five production periods, spanning the centuries from the so-called “Archaic period” (525-375 BC) to the 1st century BC. The album contains part of the photographs used in the thesis. Some images were, in fact, removed by the scholar to be included in his 1970 volume “Bronzi votivi umbro-sabellici a figura umana. I – Periodo ‘arcaico’.” This Series includes the following:
