Scope and Contents

Documents included in this file are mostly concerned with the construction of the British School at Rome building in Valle Giulia and comprise numerous (copies of) letters to/from the foreman A.J. Thomas. This file consists of two parts which are arranged over 4 folders. The first part is a bundle of letters presented in chronological order (from the most recent to the oldest letter) from 1916 and 1917. The second parts contains drawings, booklets, correspondence and receipts from 1911 to 1920 organised by subject. The documents concern primarily the execution of the building works.

A number of known Italian and British authorities are represented in this file: Ernesto Nathan, Sir E.L. Lutyens, Sir Aston Webb. Two drawings by William Squire were also included (see 'Separated materials' section in this record). Subjects of folders, which are numbered from 01 to 04, are the following:

  1. Folders 01-02: correspondence between A.J. Thomas, Sir Edwin Lutyens, Sir Evelyn Shaw, Messrs. Humphreys, William Squire and Giuseppe Ausenda about the building construction and costs from 3 January 1916 to 17 December 1917. Including a valuation of work executed to December 31st, 1915.
  2. Folders 03-04: various documents including manuscripts and copies of letters concerning the building construction from 8 December 1911 to 28 November 1920, correspondence between, E.R. Dolby, William Squire, Ernesto Nathan and Sir Edwin L. Lutyens and an inventory of all architectural drawings made until 15 February 1913. Also included two architectural drawings by William Squire (relocated).

Separated Materials

Two architectural drawings by William Squire - one showing the progress of the work from 1913 signed 'William Squire Rn Archt Rome 15 April 1913', another showing temporary sheds and fences from 1915, signed 'William Squire October 13th, 1915', which was originally in folder 03) - have been removed and transferred to the BSR Architectural Drawings Collection.
