 Series

Scope and Contents

The Gravina series houses the archaeological records of the excavation campaigns in the geographical area of Silvium (today Gravina), in Puglia. This series dates from 1965 to 1992 and consists of site notebooks, finds registers, catalogues, lists, index cards, correspondence, and photographs. The paper documentation in this series provides new evidence for the development of an Iron Age settlement on and below the hill of Botromagno, Puglia, from the Early Iron Age (10th century BC) to the Late Roman Republic (1st century BC), when the settlement was transformed into a villa and subsidiary village. The land around Botromagno was used to produce the same agricultural commodities in the Iron Age and Roman time as it did in the period covered by the archival records.

The concession for excavation was granted to the British School at Rome. Other institutions were involved, such as the London University Institute of Archaeology and the University of Alberta. The Soprintendenza alle Antichità della Puglia helped throughout the excavation.

The Gravina series is arranged thematically and chronologically. The original order remains unclear. Most site notebooks and registers within the series have titles and dates.
