Scope and Contents
Documents, photographs, maps and drawings relating to archaeological excavations carried out and funded by the BSR with the support of UK Universities, international partners and internal or external collaborators.
In Italy, archaeological excavations conducted by foreign institutions were gradually permitted only in the aftermath of World War II and following on from the relaxation of the laws that had been put in place since the creation of the Italian state.
The decades spanning from 1950s to 1980s were the most productive in terms of archaeological activity at the BSR. The first programme of such activities was the South Etruria survey, started in the autumn of 1954 and led by John Bryan Ward-Perkins together with various members of the BSR.
Archaeological excavation projects were undertaken under the aegis of BSR Directors.
