Acqua Claudia, 1981
Scope and Contents
This excavation was conducted by the BSR in March 1981, on a site located near the Acqua Claudia mineral water factory, between the towns of Anguillara and Osteria Nuova along the Via Anguillarese. At that time, the Acqua Claudia company desired to expand its premises, which required an investigative excavation, especially since the location had been previously searched, in the late 1930s, during an archaeological campaign led by Roberto Vighi, which had exposed the remains of what was interpreted as an esedra. Simon Walton directed this campaign on behalf of the BSR, and reported to the BSR Director, David Whitehouse. The archaeological site is still visible (it is called ‘Villa romana dell’Acqua Claudia’).
