This series includes copies of outgoing letters sent to various recipients during the institution's operational activities. These consist mostly of carbon copies of typescript letters, arranged in chronological order and covering the academic year, from October to July/August, or more years. Originally, these letters were collected in bound volumes, but subsequently, filed in boxes. In the early years, an index of correspondents was also compiled to facilitate browsing. There are separate Letter Books for specific types of correspondence, such as letters issued by the BSR Honorary General Secretary, the Secretary to the Faculty of Archaeology, History and Letters (FAHL), or a specific programme, such as the search for funding (Appeal Letter Book, 1960-1961). Correspondence preserved in Letter Books should be read in conjunction with incoming letters to better understand the subject matter of a distinct exchange of correspondence.
