Postcard Collection, 1880 - 1943

 Series

Scope and Contents

This series comprises Eugénie Strong's personal collection of postcard albums and loose postcards, generally arranged geographically and/or in some instances, by subject matter. Many of the postcards have been used and feature messages to Strong overleaf.

A prolific collector of postcards throughout her life, and particularly during her Roman years, Eugénie Strong's collection of postcards serve as a snapshot of both her own travels and those of her extensive network of friends and acquaintances globally. As such, this series speaks to the importance and proliferation of the picture postcard as a communication technology in the early to mid twentieth century.

No concerted effort has yet been made to record the hundreds of correspondents in this series, but recurring senders include:

- Mary Berenson (1864-1945), American-British art historian

- Lady Mary Helene Marten Witt (?-1952), art collector, art historian, and co-founder of the Witt Library at the Courtauld Institute of Art

- William Lygon, 7th Earl Beauchamp (1872-1938), British Liberal politician

- Frederick Hartt (1914-1990), Italian Renaissance scholar, author and art historian

- Katharine Jex-Blake (1860-1951), English classical scholar, suffragist, and Mistress of Girton College Cambridge from 1916-1922

- James Strachey Barnes (1890-1955), British journalist, author, and Fascist propagandist

- Mary Lowndes (1857-1929), stained-glass artist, Arts and Crafts pioneer, and suffragist
